Ptolemy Toys Walking Stick for Role Play

Fun walking stick for children. A Lumpy, bumpy, twisted walking stick that is just fantastic for role play. Be inspired....

Walking sticks were symbols of the questing traveller and the journeying pilgrim. In illustrations of the birth of Christ, the three wise men from afar are often depicted with such a stick in the left hand, their gift in the right.

Illustrations of saintly travellers like St. Christopher also show them with a travelling walking stick.

In myth and tale: the ragged traveller with the walking stick may actual be a powerful mage or even a god. Odin, the ruler of all pagan Norse gods was said to walk the earth in human form as a one-eyed beggar with a walking stick; he would test people's charity towards the poor and sickly by how they treated him as a human beggar.

Even in tales, travellers with long hard journeys, like Dick Whittington and more recently Frodo and Sam (J.R.Tolkien's fairytale questing travellers) have had travelling walking sticks to lean on.

78cm/ 30"long

Role play helps to develop many skills children need in later life, including language development, empathy and understanding others points of view, negotiation and sharing, socialising and learning about your role in the world as well as other peoples.
